Jack and Ione Carpenter were well-known and well-liked members of the Winchester community until their deaths in the early 1990’s. Married for 34 years, both Jack and Ione had been married previously to spouses who predeceased them. Jack owned and operated Carpenter Auto Supply on North Main Street and was a life-long member of the Winchester Rotary Club and the Masonic Lodge #56 of Winchester. He also served on the Randolph County Welfare Board. Ione, born in Jackson, Mississippi, was retired from teaching in Winchester and was a member of the Women’s Club. Earlier in her life, she had co-owned Overmyer Corporation with her previously deceased husband, C.P. Overmyer. After his death she continued to serve on the Overmyer Corporation Board of Directors. Both and Jack and Ione were devoted members of Main Street Christian Church where both served on the Church Board, Jack on the Board of Deacons, and Ione on the Board of Elders as well as Chairman of the Church Board. The Carpenters were generous donors in this community throughout their lifetimes. This scholarship is awarded to a student selected based on academic achievement, leadership, ability, and probable success in his/her selected field. Must have been enrolled in Winchester Community High School during eleventh and twelfth years.
