Beatrice “Bea” Hughes was born in 1916 in Grant County and was a 1933 graduate of Fairmont High School. She was a member of the Main Street Christian Church, its Bible Study, the Winchester Order of the Eastern Star and a charter member of the Randolph County Hospital auxiliary. Bea worked for many years as a volunteer in the hospital gift shop. Beatrice Hughes was a vibrant woman who loved and was inspired by enterprising young people. Her greatest wish was to help those with aspirations to better their communities. She not only wanted to be a financial mentor, but while she was living, wanted to be an encourager as they pursued their goals. This award shall be made to a boy or girl graduate of WCHS who is selected based on academic achievement, leadership, ability, financial need, and probable success in his or her field. The recipient must have been enrolled in WCHS during his/her eleventh and twelfth years of school and graduate with a ‘C’ or higher GPA.
